CSL’s Ambitions and Commitments

In recognition of the role that we can play in contributing to global efforts to address climate change and support the transition to a low-carbon future, CSL has made a commitment to minimise our climate change impact by reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

As part of our broader sustainability strategy to build a more sustainable future for employees, communities, patients and donors, in 2022, CSL announced carbon emissions reduction targets that serve as a transparent roadmap to decarbonise global operations by cutting direct and indirect carbon emissions.

At the end of May 2025, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved CSL’s near-term science based emissions reduction targets. These are:

  • CSL commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by FY2030 (from a FY2021 base year)1.
  • CSL commits that 73.1% of CSL’s suppliers by emissions – covering Scope 3 categories: purchased goods and services, capital goods, upstream transportation and distribution, business travel, and downstream transportation and distribution – will have science-based targets by FY2030.

1 In 2022, CSL announced its initial target to reduce emissions associated with its own operations by 40%. This target has since been updated to 42% to align with the SBTi’s reporting period for calendar years. CSL’s Scope 3-related target, approved by the SBTi (as outlined above), is part of CSL’s broader intention to engage suppliers who account for 67% of all CSL’s total Scope 3 emissions. CSL aims for these suppliers to have Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction targets aligned* with the SBTi. This broader intention applies to suppliers across all Scope 3 categories.

The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.

* Either the supplier has SBTi-validated targets, or CSL has conducted due diligence to confirm that the supplier’s targets meet SBTi criteria.

Water and Waste reduction commitments

CSL has continued to advance its environmental strategy in the focus areas of water and waste, with the development of waste and water reduction commitments. CSL’s water and waste reduction commitments aim to serve as a tangible and transparent roadmap towards reducing our impact. By FY2030, CSL aims to:

  • 0% Water Use - Achieve zero percent absolute growth in water use, from a FY2021 baseline at three priority manufacturing sites, Kankakee (US), Broadmeadows and Tullamarine (Australia) which are located in regions forecasted to be water stressed by 2030.
  • 90% Waste diverted from landfill - Divert more than 90% of manufacturing waste from landfill i.e., 'Zero Waste’ at all manufacturing sites.
  • Reduce landfill at Plasma collection centres - Reduce percentage of waste to landfill year on year for CSL’s Plasma collection centres.
  • Minimise incineration - Minimise percentage waste incinerated (if site is already zero waste).

Biodiversity

CSL recognises that responsible management and the efficient use of natural resources is critical to a healthier environment that promotes healthy ecosystems and biodiversity.

The Company is working towards better understanding of its potential local biodiversity impacts and mitigation strategies, and has undertaken a high-level assessments of the locations of its manufacturing facilities in relation to proximity to biodiversity sensitive areas. This assessment showed that none of CSL’s manufacturing facilities is located in or near biodiversity sensitive areas.

CSL has focused actions relating to biodiversity and has taken steps to include biodiversity as part of it’s strategic focus.

CSL has developed the following commitments for biodiversity. By FY2030, CSL aims to:

  • address any significant biodiversity impacts at manufacturing sites, resulting from biodiversity impacts assessments completed; and
  • source 100% of all paper and fibreboard for product packaging from certified sustainable forestry.

Environmental Management

CSL is committed to conducting all its operations in a way that minimises negative impact on the environment, and aims to protect biodiversity and conserve natural resources. CSL has an established Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) function, which enables its facilities to operate to industry and regulatory standards. This strategy includes compliance with government regulations and commitments to minimise the impact of operations on the environment. Our EHS Management System provides the platform for policies, procedures and guidelines that help manage our business processes.

We are committing resources and time into new technology to capture, calculate and report global environmental data, a significant stepping stone to delivering on our roadmap for achieving our emissions reduction targets.
