Progress and Purpose this Earth Day

Get an update on CSL’s commitment to sustainability and where we are prioritizing action.

Story
A CSL employee plants a small tree.
Employees, including Alicia Pascual, planted trees in Madrid and Barcelona on CSL Behring’s Iberia Volunteer Day.

The theme for Earth Day 2025 is “Our Power, Our Planet,” with the call to take action – educate, advocate and mobilize. Here’s an update from Jeffrey Ball, CSL’s Chief Sustainability Officer & Senior Vice President, Enterprise Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) and Strategy Realization:

We believe that healthier communities and a healthier environment are central to the long-term success of CSL, including the health and wellbeing of our patients, donors, employees and the communities where we operate.

CSL is a company with a complex supply chain and global footprint. Our lifesaving and life-changing medicines are used across the world, and our manufacturing operations span North America, Europe and Australia. We recognize that running a large business requires us to be mindful of our impact on the environment and the communities where we operate and align our efforts with business goals to have the greatest positive impact.

Through our Sustainability Strategy, CSL has identified ten focus areas, across healthier communities and healthier environment, where we believe we can have the most positive impact. By focusing on data-driven decision making and continuous improvement, CSL aims to create long-term value for its stakeholders while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and society.

We are proud of our achievements to date but know there is a lot more work to do, and it requires all of us at CSL to play our part so that we can achieve our goals. In line with Earth Day’s call to action of “educate, advocate and mobilize,” find more details below about some of CSL’s recent sustainability initiatives across our healthier environment focus areas.

Energy

We are reducing our carbon emissions to lower our operating costs and improve our competitive advantage while also reducing our climate change impact and preserving natural resources.

  • In FY 23-24, even with the expansion of some of our existing facilities and the return to pre- COVID levels of production for most products, our total Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions have remained relatively stable. CSL’s Scope 1 emissions increased slightly due to a change in methodology for refrigerants, as more accurate data is now available. Meanwhile, our Scope 2 emissions decreased driven by increased renewable energy use across the CSL enterprise. We continue to work towards our Scope 3 targets.
  • In FY 23-24, the proportion of electricity purchased by CSL from renewable sources increased by 2% to 19%.
  • Our European manufacturing sites have been using 100% renewable purchased electricity since early 2023. And all electricity used by our Australian manufacturing sites has been matched by renewable electricity certificates since January 2025.

Waste

  • We are minimizing end-to-end production of waste through reduction, recycling and composting to increase cost savings and reduce environmental impact. Last year CSL announced a waste reduction target to divert more than 90% of manufacturing waste from landfills i.e., ‘Zero Waste’ at all manufacturing sites.
  • CSL continues to achieve improved recycling rates. For our most recent reporting period, CSL’s waste recycling rate increased by 4% to 48% of total waste, compared to the prior year.

Water

We are identifying, prioritizing and implementing water reduction initiatives to improve operational efficiency and conserve water resources.

  • Last year we announced our water use and waste targets. By 2030, CSL aims to achieve zero percent absolute growth in water use, from a FY2021 baseline at three priority manufacturing sites: Kankakee (US), Broadmeadows and Tullamarine (Australia), which are all located in regions forecast to be water stressed by 2030.
